Space and the outdoors with a Kanni Puppy

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a loyal, shy, alert dog the fit is usually good either way.

Health and vet care in Mohanur

Local climate decides which problems actually turn up. Given the air stays humid through much of the year, so coat and skin care need attention, the recurring ones here are skin and coat trouble, parasites and hydration — not the whole textbook. Keep vaccination and deworming on schedule, and book the check before the long monsoon rather than during it. Dry the coat and ears thoroughly after baths or rain to prevent fungal and skin issues.

Is the Kanni Puppy right for Mohanur?

Start with the weather, not the breed standard. Here the air stays humid through much of the year, so coat and skin care need attention, and a large-sized dog feels that more than an owner expects. The Kanni Puppy adapts well to Mohanur on a sensible routine — shorter outings, timed away from the midday heat. Brush regularly — humidity makes mats and tangles form faster in longer coats.

Feeding a large dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a large frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because the air stays humid through much of the year, so coat and skin care need attention, keep water available and watch intake through the long monsoon.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Mohanur is hottest in April, averaging 39°C in the afternoon. A Kanni needs real protection from that because a large body sheds heat slowly: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are mild, with January nights around 18°C, so cold is not a concern.

Most of the year's rain falls in October. Check for ticks after every walk.

For a new Kanni puppy, the easiest months to arrive are January, February, June, July, August, September and December: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
