Feeding a large dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a large build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In humid coastal conditions water matters as much as food — the air stays humid through much of the year, so coat and skin care need attention, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Living with a Kanni Puppy in Thoothukkudi

Homes here often have more space and independent plots, which gives a Kanni Puppy room to move and settle in comfortably. With more room to work with, the routine can stay informal, though it should still be regular.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Grooming and coat care in Thoothukkudi

The aim is dry, clean skin — appearance comes second. Thoothukkudi being humid coastal, the air stays humid through much of the year, so coat and skin care need attention, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. Stay current on tick and flea prevention, which thrive in warm, damp conditions.

Space and the outdoors with a Kanni Puppy

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a loyal, shy, alert dog the fit is usually good either way.

Summer here peaks in March at about 35°C. That is manageable for a Kanni, but watch it closely because a large body sheds heat slowly: keep activity to the cooler ends of the day and a shaded, ventilated spot indoors.

Winters stay warm, with even January nights around 21°C, so there is no cold season to plan for.

The rainy season runs from October to November, and November is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk.

For a new Kanni puppy, the easiest months to arrive are December to September: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
