The Kanni Puppy adapts well to Chilkur on a sensible routine — shorter outings, timed away from the midday heat. Maintain a regular grooming routine suited to the breed's coat.

Exercise and routine through the brief pre-monsoon heat in Chilkur

Build the day around local conditions rather than a figure from a breed chart. The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Chilkur is hottest in May, averaging 40°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to May. A Kanni needs real protection from that because a large body sheds heat slowly: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are mild, with December nights around 14°C, so cold is not a concern.

The rainy season runs from July to September, and August is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk.

For a new Kanni puppy, the easiest months to arrive are January, February, June, October, November and December: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
