Exercise and routine through the brief pre-monsoon heat in Chilkur

The brief pre-monsoon heat is the stretch that needs planning. The balanced weather is one of the easier indian climates for pet ownership, so split the activity across two cooler outings rather than one long session. Consistency does more for a Pointer Puppy than intensity ever will. Provide shade and water during the short hot spell before the monsoon.

Feeding a large dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a large build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In pleasant semi-tropical conditions water matters as much as food — the balanced weather is one of the easier Indian climates for pet ownership, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Space and the outdoors with a Pointer Puppy

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a loyal, loving, confident dog the fit is usually good either way.

Living with a Pointer Puppy in Chilkur

With independent houses common, there is usually room for a large-sized breed to exercise at home. With more room to work with, the routine can stay informal, though it should still be regular.

Chilkur is hottest in May, averaging 40°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to May. A Pointer needs real protection from that because a large body sheds heat slowly: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are mild, with December nights around 14°C, so cold is not a concern.

The rainy season runs from July to September, and August is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry inside the ears after baths and rain, since droopy ears trap moisture.

For a new Pointer puppy, the easiest months to arrive are January, February, June, October, November and December: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
