Space and the outdoors with a Kanni Puppy

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a loyal, shy, alert dog the fit is usually good either way.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Is the Kanni Puppy right for Veldanda?

The Kanni Puppy does well in Veldanda, with one caveat worth knowing up front: comfortable temperatures for most of the year make routine care straightforward. For a loyal, shy, alert, large-sized breed that mostly changes when things happen rather than what happens. Provide shade and water during the short hot spell before the monsoon.

Health and vet care in Veldanda

Preventive care in Veldanda is largely a matter of anticipating the brief pre-monsoon heat. Parasite control and skin checks earn their keep here more than they would elsewhere. The vaccination record travels with the puppy; staying on schedule is the single best habit there is. Maintain a regular grooming routine suited to the breed's coat.

Veldanda is hottest in May, averaging 41°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from March to May. A Kanni needs real protection from that because a large body sheds heat slowly: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are mild, with December nights around 16°C, so cold is not a concern.

The rainy season runs from July to September, and August is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk.

For a new Kanni puppy, the easiest months to arrive are November to February: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
