The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most puppies eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Space and the outdoors with a Shih Tzu

Homes around Devprayag usually come with their own ground, which takes the pressure off a formal exercise plan. A small-sized breed manages this well when the outdoor time is genuinely regular.

Grooming and coat care in Devprayag

The aim is dry, clean skin — appearance comes second. Devprayag being cold mountain, the cooler climate suits thick-coated breeds but needs winter planning for others, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. Check paws for cracking and ice between toes during the coldest months.

Living with a Shih Tzu in Devprayag

With independent houses common, there is usually room for a small-sized breed to exercise at home. Owners in the northern region tend to find this dog a playful, affectionate, gentle companion, and the settling-in is usually easier than the first week suggests.

Feeding a small dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a small build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In cold mountain conditions water matters as much as food — the cooler climate suits thick-coated breeds but needs winter planning for others, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Summer here peaks in May at about 33°C. That is manageable for a Shih Tzu, but watch it closely because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: keep activity to the cooler ends of the day and a shaded, ventilated spot indoors.

Winter nights fall to about 4°C in January. A Shih Tzu feels that: bedding raised off the floor, a sweater or warm cover at night, and a room kept out of the draught.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive are April and October: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
