Feeding a large dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a large frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because the cooler climate suits thick-coated breeds but needs winter planning for others, keep water available and watch intake through the cold winter season.

Exercise and routine through the cold winter season in Rishikesh

Build the day around local conditions rather than a figure from a breed chart. In Rishikesh, the cooler climate suits thick-coated breeds but needs winter planning for others, which makes timing the variable that matters. Two shorter outings work better here for a breed this size. Keep up daily exercise — the cool weather is ideal for longer, more active walks.

Space and the outdoors with a Afghan Hound Puppy

Homes around Rishikesh usually come with their own ground, which takes the pressure off a formal exercise plan. A breed this size needs that outdoor time to be dependable, not occasional.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Grooming and coat care in Rishikesh

The aim is dry, clean skin — appearance comes second. Rishikesh being cold mountain, the cooler climate suits thick-coated breeds but needs winter planning for others, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. Keep up daily exercise — the cool weather is ideal for longer, more active walks.

Rishikesh is hottest in May, averaging 40°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from May to June. A Afghan Hound needs real protection from that because a large body sheds heat slowly: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 8°C.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry inside the ears after baths and rain, since droopy ears trap moisture.

For a new Afghan Hound puppy, the easiest months to arrive are October to March: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
