The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Feeding a giant dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a giant build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In cold mountain conditions water matters as much as food — winters get genuinely cold, so warmth and joint care take priority, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Living with a Great Dane Puppy in Rishikesh

With independent houses common, there is usually room for a giant-sized breed to exercise at home. With more room to work with, the routine can stay informal, though it should still be regular.

Health and vet care in Rishikesh

Local climate decides which problems actually turn up. Given winters get genuinely cold, so warmth and joint care take priority, the recurring ones here are skin and coat trouble, parasites and hydration — not the whole textbook. Keep vaccination and deworming on schedule, and book the check before the cold winter season rather than during it. Keep up daily exercise — the cool weather is ideal for longer, more active walks.

Rishikesh is hottest in May, averaging 40°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from May to June. A Great Dane needs real protection from that because a giant body sheds heat slowly: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 8°C. A Great Dane has a short, thin coat, so a light sweater helps on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk.

For a new Great Dane puppy, the easiest months to arrive are March, October and November: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
