Feeding a giant dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a giant frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because crisp hill weather is comfortable for most dogs but harsh for short-coated ones in winter, keep water available and watch intake through the cold winter season.

Exercise and routine through the cold winter season in Rishikesh

Build the day around local conditions rather than a figure from a breed chart. In Rishikesh, crisp hill weather is comfortable for most dogs but harsh for short-coated ones in winter, which makes timing the variable that matters. Two shorter outings work better here for a breed this size. Provide a warm, draught-free sleeping spot and a coat for short-haired breeds in winter.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most puppies eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Space and the outdoors with a Newfoundland Puppy

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a gentle, patient, calm dog the fit is usually good either way.

Is the Newfoundland Puppy right for Rishikesh?

For a gentle, patient, calm, giant-sized breed that mostly changes when things happen rather than what happens. Keep up daily exercise — the cool weather is ideal for longer, more active walks.

Rishikesh is hottest in May, averaging 40°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from May to June. A Newfoundland needs real protection from that because a giant body sheds heat slowly: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 8°C.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk.

For a new Newfoundland puppy, the easiest months to arrive are October to March: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
