Feeding a small bird here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a small build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In hot-summer / cool-winter conditions water matters as much as food — extreme summer heat and a brisk winter both need planning across the year, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Grooming and coat care in Mahnar

The aim is dry, clean skin — appearance comes second. Mahnar being hot-summer / cool-winter, extreme summer heat and a brisk winter both need planning across the year, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. Keep deworming and vaccination on schedule — seasonal changes can stress the immune system.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the bird approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Mahnar is hottest in May, averaging 42°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to June. A Dusky Lorikeet needs real protection from that: a cage well away from windows and direct sun, a shallow bath dish, and a room that stays under about 32°C.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 8°C. A light sweater helps a small Dusky Lorikeet on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Keep the cage out of damp corners and change the paper daily.

For a new Dusky Lorikeet bird, the easiest months to arrive are March, October and November: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
