The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the bird approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Exercise and routine through the peak summer and winter swings in Simri

The peak summer and winter swings is the stretch that needs planning. The wide seasonal range means both cooling in summer and warmth in winter matter, so keep sessions short and frequent. Consistency does more for a Dusky Lorikeet than intensity ever will. Watch for seasonal coat shedding as temperatures change and brush accordingly.

Feeding a small bird here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a small build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In hot-summer / cool-winter conditions water matters as much as food — the wide seasonal range means both cooling in summer and warmth in winter matter, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Grooming and coat care in Simri

Let the weather set the schedule, not the calendar. With the wide seasonal range means both cooling in summer and warmth in winter matter, a Dusky Lorikeet's coat and skin want checking more often through the peak summer and winter swings. On a smaller coat, irritation shows up well before matting does. Provide shade and constant water in summer; a warm bed and blanket in winter.

Space and the outdoors with a Dusky Lorikeet

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a family friendly, good with kids bird the fit is usually good either way.

Simri is hottest in May, averaging 41°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to June. A Dusky Lorikeet needs real protection from that: a cage well away from windows and direct sun, a shallow bath dish, and a room that stays under about 32°C.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 8°C. A light sweater helps a small Dusky Lorikeet on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Keep the cage out of damp corners and change the paper daily.

For a new Dusky Lorikeet bird, the easiest months to arrive are March, October and November: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
