Is the Red Collared Lorikeet right for Deodar?

Start with the weather, not the breed standard. Here summers are long and intense, so heat management is the single biggest priority, and a small-sized bird feels that more than an owner expects. The Red Collared Lorikeet adapts well to Deodar on a sensible routine — steady hydration and shade rather than reduced activity. Watch for signs of overheating — heavy panting, drooling or lethargy — during peak afternoons.

Feeding a small bird here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a small build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In hot, dry conditions water matters as much as food — summers are long and intense, so heat management is the single biggest priority, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Deodar is hottest in May, averaging 43°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to June. A Red Collared Lorikeet needs real protection from that: a cage well away from windows and direct sun, a shallow bath dish, and a room that stays under about 32°C.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 11°C. A light sweater helps a small Red Collared Lorikeet on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from July to August, and July is usually the wettest month. Keep the cage out of damp corners and change the paper daily.

For a new Red Collared Lorikeet bird, the easiest months to arrive are February, September, October, November and December: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
