The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the bird approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Is the Red Collared Lorikeet right for Dadi?

Start with the weather, not the breed standard. Here the climate swings from hot summers to cool winters, so care changes with the season, and a small-sized bird feels that more than an owner expects. The Red Collared Lorikeet adapts well to Dadi on a sensible routine — steady hydration and shade rather than reduced activity. Keep deworming and vaccination on schedule — seasonal changes can stress the immune system.

Grooming and coat care in Dadi

The aim is dry, clean skin — appearance comes second. Dadi being subtropical plains, the climate swings from hot summers to cool winters, so care changes with the season, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. Keep deworming and vaccination on schedule — seasonal changes can stress the immune system.

Exercise and routine through the peak summer and winter swings in Dadi

Build the day around local conditions rather than a figure from a breed chart. In Dadi, the climate swings from hot summers to cool winters, so care changes with the season, which makes timing the variable that matters. Several brief outings suit this size better than one long one. Keep deworming and vaccination on schedule — seasonal changes can stress the immune system.

Space and the outdoors with a Red Collared Lorikeet

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a family friendly, good with kids bird the fit is usually good either way.

Dadi is hottest in May, averaging 40°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to May. A Red Collared Lorikeet needs real protection from that: a cage well away from windows and direct sun, a shallow bath dish, and a room that stays under about 32°C.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 8°C. A light sweater helps a small Red Collared Lorikeet on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Keep the cage out of damp corners and change the paper daily.

For a new Red Collared Lorikeet bird, the easiest months to arrive are February, March, October and November: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
