Living with a Chattering Lorikeet in Ramtek

With independent houses common, there is usually room for a small-sized breed to exercise at home. Owners in western India tend to find this bird a family friendly, good with kids companion, and the settling-in is usually easier than the first week suggests.

Feeding a small bird here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a small build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In coastal tropical conditions water matters as much as food — moisture in the air can encourage skin and ear issues if grooming slips, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Exercise and routine through the long monsoon in Ramtek

The long monsoon is the stretch that needs planning. Moisture in the air can encourage skin and ear issues if grooming slips, so keep sessions short and frequent. Consistency does more for a Chattering Lorikeet than intensity ever will. Brush regularly — humidity makes mats and tangles form faster in longer coats.

Grooming and coat care in Ramtek

The aim is dry, clean skin — appearance comes second. Ramtek being coastal tropical, moisture in the air can encourage skin and ear issues if grooming slips, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. Keep bedding dry and the resting area well-ventilated, especially during the monsoon.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most birds eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Ramtek is hottest in May, averaging 44°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to May. A Chattering Lorikeet needs real protection from that: a cage well away from windows and direct sun, a shallow bath dish, and a room that stays under about 32°C.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 12°C. A light sweater helps a small Chattering Lorikeet on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Keep the cage out of damp corners and change the paper daily.

For a new Chattering Lorikeet bird, the easiest months to arrive are February, October and November: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
