Living with a Red Lorikeet in Dharmasala

With independent houses common, there is usually room for a small-sized breed to exercise at home. With more room to work with, the routine can stay informal, though it should still be regular.

Is the Red Lorikeet right for Dharmasala?

Dharmasala is warm and humid — the sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important — and the Red Lorikeet is a small-sized, family friendly, good with kids breed. Those two facts decide most of what daily life looks like here. A breed this size copes well, provided shade and water are always within reach. Keep bedding dry and the resting area well-ventilated, especially during the monsoon.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the bird approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Feeding a small bird here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a small frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because the sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important, keep water available and watch intake through the long monsoon.

Space and the outdoors with a Red Lorikeet

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a family friendly, good with kids bird the fit is usually good either way.

Summer here peaks in April at about 37°C. That is manageable for a Red Lorikeet: keep activity to the cooler ends of the day and a shaded, ventilated spot indoors.

Winters stay warm, with even January nights around 19°C, so there is no cold season to plan for.

The rainy season runs from October to November, and November is usually the wettest month. Keep the cage out of damp corners and change the paper daily.

For a new Red Lorikeet bird, the easiest months to arrive are January, February, August and December: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
