Grooming and coat care in Jamda

The aim is dry, clean skin — appearance comes second. Jamda being coastal tropical, moisture in the air can encourage skin and ear issues if grooming slips, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. Dry the coat and ears thoroughly after baths or rain to prevent fungal and skin issues.

Feeding a small bird here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a small frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because moisture in the air can encourage skin and ear issues if grooming slips, keep water available and watch intake through the long monsoon.

Exercise and routine through the long monsoon in Jamda

The long monsoon is the stretch that needs planning. Moisture in the air can encourage skin and ear issues if grooming slips, so keep sessions short and frequent. Consistency does more for a Dusky Lorikeet than intensity ever will. Brush regularly — humidity makes mats and tangles form faster in longer coats.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the bird approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

With independent houses common, there is usually room for a small-sized breed to exercise at home. Owners in eastern India tend to find this bird a family friendly, good with kids companion, and the settling-in is usually easier than the first week suggests.

Jamda is hottest in April, averaging 40°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to May. A Dusky Lorikeet needs real protection from that: a cage well away from windows and direct sun, a shallow bath dish, and a room that stays under about 32°C.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 9°C. A light sweater helps a small Dusky Lorikeet on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Keep the cage out of damp corners and change the paper daily.

For a new Dusky Lorikeet bird, the easiest months to arrive are February, October and November: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
