Is the Dusky Lorikeet right for Koida?

Start with the weather, not the breed standard. Here the sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important, and a small-sized bird feels that more than an owner expects. The Dusky Lorikeet adapts well to Koida on a sensible routine — steady hydration and shade rather than reduced activity. Brush regularly — humidity makes mats and tangles form faster in longer coats.

Koida is hottest in May, averaging 40°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to May. A Dusky Lorikeet needs real protection from that: a cage well away from windows and direct sun, a shallow bath dish, and a room that stays under about 32°C.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 10°C. A light sweater helps a small Dusky Lorikeet on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Keep the cage out of damp corners and change the paper daily.

For a new Dusky Lorikeet bird, the easiest months to arrive are February, October and November: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
