Space and the outdoors with a Red Collared Lorikeet

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a family friendly, good with kids bird the fit is usually good either way.

Feeding a small bird here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a small frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because summers are long and intense, so heat management is the single biggest priority, keep water available and watch intake through the dry summer months.

Is the Red Collared Lorikeet right for Bap?

Start with the weather, not the breed standard. Here summers are long and intense, so heat management is the single biggest priority, and a small-sized bird feels that more than an owner expects. The Red Collared Lorikeet adapts well to Bap on a sensible routine — steady hydration and shade rather than reduced activity. A light summer trim (for double-coated breeds, never shave to the skin) helps comfort.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most birds eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Grooming and coat care in Bap

Let the weather set the schedule, not the calendar. With summers are long and intense, so heat management is the single biggest priority, a Red Collared Lorikeet's coat and skin want checking more often through the dry summer months. On a smaller coat, irritation shows up well before matting does. A light summer trim (for double-coated breeds, never shave to the skin) helps comfort.

Bap is hottest in May, averaging 42°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to July. A Red Collared Lorikeet needs real protection from that: a cage well away from windows and direct sun, a shallow bath dish, and a room that stays under about 32°C.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 8°C. A light sweater helps a small Red Collared Lorikeet on the coldest nights.

There is no long rainy season; what rain there is falls mostly in August.

For a new Red Collared Lorikeet bird, the easiest months to arrive are March and November: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
