The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the bird approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Space and the outdoors with a Dusky Lorikeet

Homes around Behrawanda usually come with their own ground, which takes the pressure off a formal exercise plan. A small-sized breed manages this well when the outdoor time is genuinely regular.

Feeding a small bird here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a small frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because the dry heat means hydration and shade matter more than almost anything else, keep water available and watch intake through the dry summer months.

Living with a Dusky Lorikeet in Behrawanda

Larger plots and open surroundings make this a comfortable setting for an active Dusky Lorikeet. Owners throughout the northern belt tend to find this bird a family friendly, good with kids companion, and the settling-in is usually easier than the first week suggests.

Grooming and coat care in Behrawanda

The aim is dry, clean skin — appearance comes second. Behrawanda being hot, dry, the dry heat means hydration and shade matter more than almost anything else, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. Behrawanda is hottest in May, averaging 43°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to June. A Dusky Lorikeet needs real protection from that: a cage well away from windows and direct sun, a shallow bath dish, and a room that stays under about 32°C.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 7°C. A light sweater helps a small Dusky Lorikeet on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from July to August, and August is usually the wettest month. Keep the cage out of damp corners and change the paper daily.

For a new Dusky Lorikeet bird, the easiest months to arrive are March, September, October and November: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
