The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the bird approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Is the Dusky Lorikeet right for Ramsar?

Start with the weather, not the breed standard. Here daytime temperatures climb high for much of the year, which shapes daily routines, and a small-sized bird feels that more than an owner expects. The Dusky Lorikeet adapts well to Ramsar on a sensible routine — steady hydration and shade rather than reduced activity. Walk early in the morning or after sunset when the ground is cool, never on hot pavement.

Exercise and routine through the dry summer months in Ramsar

The dry summer months is the stretch that needs planning. Daytime temperatures climb high for much of the year, which shapes daily routines, so keep sessions short and frequent. Consistency does more for a Dusky Lorikeet than intensity ever will. A light summer trim (for double-coated breeds, never shave to the skin) helps comfort.

Feeding a small bird here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a small frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because daytime temperatures climb high for much of the year, which shapes daily routines, keep water available and watch intake through the dry summer months.

Ramsar is hottest in May, averaging 42°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from May to July. A Dusky Lorikeet needs real protection from that: a cage well away from windows and direct sun, a shallow bath dish, and a room that stays under about 32°C.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 7°C. A light sweater helps a small Dusky Lorikeet on the coldest nights.

There is no long rainy season; what rain there is falls mostly in July.

For a new Dusky Lorikeet bird, the easiest months to arrive are March, October and November: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
