Is the Dusky Lorikeet right for Todabhim?

Todabhim is warm and arid — the dry heat means hydration and shade matter more than almost anything else — and the Dusky Lorikeet is a small-sized, family friendly, good with kids breed. Those two facts decide most of what daily life looks like here. A breed this size copes well, provided shade and water are always within reach. Walk early in the morning or after sunset when the ground is cool, never on hot pavement.

Feeding a small bird here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a small build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In warm and arid conditions water matters as much as food — the dry heat means hydration and shade matter more than almost anything else, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the bird approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Space and the outdoors with a Dusky Lorikeet

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a family friendly, good with kids bird the fit is usually good either way.

Todabhim is hottest in May, averaging 43°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to June. A Dusky Lorikeet needs real protection from that: a cage well away from windows and direct sun, a shallow bath dish, and a room that stays under about 32°C.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 7°C. A light sweater helps a small Dusky Lorikeet on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from July to August, and August is usually the wettest month. Keep the cage out of damp corners and change the paper daily.

For a new Dusky Lorikeet bird, the easiest months to arrive are March, September, October and November: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
