The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most birds eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Space and the outdoors with a Rainbow Lorikeet

Homes around Dentam usually come with their own ground, which takes the pressure off a formal exercise plan. A small-sized breed manages this well when the outdoor time is genuinely regular.

Health and vet care in Dentam

Preventive care in Dentam is largely a matter of anticipating the cold winter season. Parasite control and skin checks earn their keep here more than they would elsewhere. The vaccination record travels with the bird; staying on schedule is the single best habit there is. Check paws for cracking and ice between toes during the coldest months.

Grooming and coat care in Dentam

The aim is dry, clean skin — appearance comes second. Dentam being temperate highland, the cooler climate suits thick-coated breeds but needs winter planning for others, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. Keep up daily exercise — the cool weather is ideal for longer, more active walks.

The city sits at about 1,715 m above sea level, so it runs cooler than the plains around it.

Summers here are mild, peaking at about 27°C in June, so heat is rarely the problem for a Rainbow Lorikeet that it is on the plains.

Winter nights fall to about 4°C in January. A Rainbow Lorikeet feels that: bedding raised off the floor, a sweater or warm cover at night, and a room kept out of the draught.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Keep the cage out of damp corners and change the paper daily.

For a new Rainbow Lorikeet bird, the easiest months to arrive are May and October: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
