Feeding a medium bird here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a medium build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In cold mountain conditions water matters as much as food — the cooler climate suits thick-coated breeds but needs winter planning for others, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Space and the outdoors with a Blue Fronted Amazon

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a family friendly, good with kids bird the fit is usually good either way.

Is the Blue Fronted Amazon right for Ravangla?

Ravangla is cold mountain — the cooler climate suits thick-coated breeds but needs winter planning for others — and the Blue Fronted Amazon is a medium-sized, family friendly, good with kids breed. Those two facts decide most of what daily life looks like here. A breed this size copes well, provided shade and water are always within reach. Check paws for cracking and ice between toes during the coldest months.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the bird approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

The city sits at about 2,022 m above sea level, so it runs cooler than the plains around it.

Summers here are mild, peaking at about 25°C in June, so heat is rarely the problem for a Blue Fronted Amazon that it is on the plains.

Winter nights fall to about 2°C in January. A Blue Fronted Amazon feels that: bedding raised off the floor, a sweater or warm cover at night, and a room kept out of the draught.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Keep the cage out of damp corners and change the paper daily.

For a new Blue Fronted Amazon bird, the easiest months to arrive are May: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
