Grooming and coat care in Chegunta

The aim is dry, clean skin — appearance comes second. Chegunta being pleasant semi-tropical, comfortable temperatures for most of the year make routine care straightforward, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. Maintain a regular grooming routine suited to the breed's coat.

Space and the outdoors with a Red Collared Lorikeet

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a family friendly, good with kids bird the fit is usually good either way.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the bird approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Exercise and routine through the brief pre-monsoon heat in Chegunta

The brief pre-monsoon heat is the stretch that needs planning. Comfortable temperatures for most of the year make routine care straightforward, so keep sessions short and frequent. Consistency does more for a Red Collared Lorikeet than intensity ever will. Keep vaccinations, deworming and annual vet checks on schedule year-round.

Feeding a small bird here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a small build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In pleasant semi-tropical conditions water matters as much as food — comfortable temperatures for most of the year make routine care straightforward, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Chegunta is hottest in May, averaging 40°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to May. A Red Collared Lorikeet needs real protection from that: a cage well away from windows and direct sun, a shallow bath dish, and a room that stays under about 32°C.

Winters are mild, with December nights around 13°C, so cold is not a concern.

The rainy season runs from July to September, and August is usually the wettest month. Keep the cage out of damp corners and change the paper daily.

For a new Red Collared Lorikeet bird, the easiest months to arrive are January, February, June, October, November and December: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
