Feeding a small bird here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a small frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because the plateau climate is relatively moderate, which suits a wide range of breeds, keep water available and watch intake through the brief pre-monsoon heat.

Is the Blue Sided right for Devarakonda?

Devarakonda is moderate Deccan — the plateau climate is relatively moderate, which suits a wide range of breeds — and the Blue Sided is a small-sized, family friendly, good with kids breed. Those two facts decide most of what daily life looks like here. A breed this size copes well, provided shade and water are always within reach. Keep vaccinations, deworming and annual vet checks on schedule year-round.

Devarakonda is hottest in May, averaging 40°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to May. A Blue Sided needs real protection from that: a cage well away from windows and direct sun, a shallow bath dish, and a room that stays under about 32°C.

Winters are mild, with December nights around 15°C, so cold is not a concern.

Most of the year's rain falls in September. Keep the cage out of damp corners and change the paper daily.

For a new Blue Sided bird, the easiest months to arrive are January, February, June, October, November and December: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
