Living with a Blue & Gold Macaw in Munugode

Larger plots and open surroundings make this a comfortable setting for an active Blue & Gold Macaw. With more room to work with, the routine can stay informal, though it should still be regular.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most birds eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Health and vet care in Munugode

Preventive care in Munugode is largely a matter of anticipating the brief pre-monsoon heat. Parasite control and skin checks earn their keep here more than they would elsewhere. The vaccination record travels with the bird; staying on schedule is the single best habit there is. Maintain a regular grooming routine suited to the breed's coat.

Feeding a large bird here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a large build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In mild tropical plateau conditions water matters as much as food — comfortable temperatures for most of the year make routine care straightforward, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Munugode is hottest in May, averaging 41°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from March to May. A Blue & Gold Macaw needs real protection from that: a cage well away from windows and direct sun, a shallow bath dish, and a room that stays under about 32°C.

Winters are mild, with December nights around 16°C, so cold is not a concern.

Most of the year's rain falls in August. Keep the cage out of damp corners and change the paper daily.

For a new Blue & Gold Macaw bird, the easiest months to arrive are October to February: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
