Space and the outdoors with a Dusky Lorikeet

Health and vet care in Rayaparthy

Local climate decides which problems actually turn up. Given comfortable temperatures for most of the year make routine care straightforward, the recurring ones here are skin and coat trouble, parasites and hydration — not the whole textbook. Keep vaccination and deworming on schedule, and book the check before the brief pre-monsoon heat rather than during it. Keep vaccinations, deworming and annual vet checks on schedule year-round.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the bird approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Feeding a small bird here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a small build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In moderate Deccan conditions water matters as much as food — comfortable temperatures for most of the year make routine care straightforward, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Rayaparthy is hottest in May, averaging 42°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from March to May. A Dusky Lorikeet needs real protection from that: a cage well away from windows and direct sun, a shallow bath dish, and a room that stays under about 32°C.

Winters are mild, with December nights around 14°C, so cold is not a concern.

The rainy season runs from July to August, and August is usually the wettest month. Keep the cage out of damp corners and change the paper daily.

For a new Dusky Lorikeet bird, the easiest months to arrive are October to February: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
