Grooming and coat care in Basukedar

The aim is dry, clean skin — appearance comes second. Basukedar being cold mountain, crisp hill weather is comfortable for most dogs but harsh for short-coated ones in winter, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. Provide a warm, draught-free sleeping spot and a coat for short-haired breeds in winter.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most birds eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

The city sits at about 1,361 m above sea level, so it runs cooler than the plains around it.

Summers here are mild, peaking at about 31°C in June, so heat is rarely the problem for a Chattering Lorikeet that it is on the plains.

Winter nights fall to about 4°C in January. A Chattering Lorikeet feels that: bedding raised off the floor, a sweater or warm cover at night, and a room kept out of the draught.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Keep the cage out of damp corners and change the paper daily.

For a new Chattering Lorikeet bird, the easiest months to arrive are April, May and October: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
