Is the Dusky Lorikeet right for Ranikhet?

Start with the weather, not the breed standard. Here winters get genuinely cold, so warmth and joint care take priority, and a small-sized bird feels that more than an owner expects. The Dusky Lorikeet adapts well to Ranikhet on a sensible routine — steady hydration and shade rather than reduced activity. Check paws for cracking and ice between toes during the coldest months.

Feeding a small bird here

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most birds eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

The city sits at about 1,804 m above sea level, so it runs cooler than the plains around it.

Summers here are mild, peaking at about 30°C in May, so heat is rarely the problem for a Dusky Lorikeet that it is on the plains.

Winter nights fall to about -0°C in January. A Dusky Lorikeet feels that: bedding raised off the floor, a sweater or warm cover at night, and a room kept out of the draught.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Keep the cage out of damp corners and change the paper daily.

For a new Dusky Lorikeet bird, the easiest months to arrive are May: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
