Exercise and routine through the cold winter season in Tharali

The cold winter season is the stretch that needs planning. The cooler climate suits thick-coated breeds but needs winter planning for others, so keep sessions short and frequent. Consistency does more for a Dusky Lorikeet than intensity ever will. Keep up daily exercise — the cool weather is ideal for longer, more active walks.

The aim is dry, clean skin — appearance comes second. Tharali being cold mountain, the cooler climate suits thick-coated breeds but needs winter planning for others, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. Provide a warm, draught-free sleeping spot and a coat for short-haired breeds in winter.

Feeding a small bird here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a small frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because the cooler climate suits thick-coated breeds but needs winter planning for others, keep water available and watch intake through the cold winter season.

Summers here are mild, peaking at about 28°C in May, so heat is rarely the problem for a Dusky Lorikeet that it is on the plains.

Winter nights fall to about 0°C in January. A Dusky Lorikeet feels that: bedding raised off the floor, a sweater or warm cover at night, and a room kept out of the draught.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Keep the cage out of damp corners and change the paper daily.

For a new Dusky Lorikeet bird, the easiest months to arrive are May: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
