The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Space and the outdoors with a Shih Tzu

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a bold, lively, friendly dog the fit is usually good either way.

Is the Shih Tzu right for Devadurga?

Start with the weather, not the breed standard. Here comfortable temperatures for most of the year make routine care straightforward, and a small-sized dog feels that more than an owner expects. The Shih Tzu adapts well to Devadurga on a sensible routine — steady hydration and shade rather than reduced activity. Provide shade and water during the short hot spell before the monsoon.

Feeding a small dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a small build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In pleasant semi-tropical conditions water matters as much as food — comfortable temperatures for most of the year make routine care straightforward, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Living with a Shih Tzu in Devadurga

With independent houses common, there is usually room for a small-sized breed to exercise at home. With more room to work with, the routine can stay informal, though it should still be regular.

Devadurga is hottest in April, averaging 40°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from March to May. A Shih Tzu needs real protection from that because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are mild, with December nights around 15°C, so cold is not a concern.

Most of the year's rain falls in September. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive are August, October, November and December: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
