Exercise and routine through the extended rainy season in Suangdoh

Build the day around local conditions rather than a figure from a breed chart. In Suangdoh, near-constant moisture means skin, paw and bedding hygiene need real attention, which makes timing the variable that matters. Two shorter outings work better here for a breed this size. Keep a dry, raised resting area — prolonged damp leads to skin and paw problems.

Health and vet care in Suangdoh

Local climate decides which problems actually turn up. Given near-constant moisture means skin, paw and bedding hygiene need real attention, the recurring ones here are skin and coat trouble, parasites and hydration — not the whole textbook. Keep vaccination and deworming on schedule, and book the check before the extended rainy season rather than during it. Keep a dry, raised resting area — prolonged damp leads to skin and paw problems.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Feeding a large dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a large frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because near-constant moisture means skin, paw and bedding hygiene need real attention, keep water available and watch intake through the extended rainy season.

Summers here are mild, peaking at about 30°C in April, so heat is rarely the problem for a Pointer that it is on the plains.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 7°C. A Pointer has a short, thin coat, so a light sweater helps on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from June to July, and June is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry inside the ears after baths and rain, since droopy ears trap moisture.

For a new Pointer puppy, the easiest months to arrive are March, April, September, October and November: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
