Feeding a large dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a large build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In temperate highland conditions water matters as much as food — winters get genuinely cold, so warmth and joint care take priority, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Exercise and routine through the cold winter season in Ranikhet

The cold winter season is the stretch that needs planning. Winters get genuinely cold, so warmth and joint care take priority, so split the activity across two cooler outings rather than one long session. Consistency does more for a Kanni Puppy than intensity ever will. Check paws for cracking and ice between toes during the coldest months.

Local climate decides which problems actually turn up. Given winters get genuinely cold, so warmth and joint care take priority, the recurring ones here are skin and coat trouble, parasites and hydration — not the whole textbook. The city sits at about 1,804 m above sea level, so it runs cooler than the plains around it.

Summers here are mild, peaking at about 30°C in May, so heat is rarely the problem for a Kanni that it is on the plains.

Winter nights fall to about -0°C in January. A Kanni feels that: bedding raised off the floor, a sweater or warm cover at night, and a room kept out of the draught.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk.

For a new Kanni puppy, the easiest months to arrive are May: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
