Space and the outdoors with a Jenday Conure

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a family friendly, good with kids bird the fit is usually good either way.

Is the Jenday Conure right for Chen?

Chen is monsoon-heavy — rainfall is among the highest in the country, so wet-weather care is essential — and the Jenday Conure is a small-sized, family friendly, good with kids breed. Those two facts decide most of what daily life looks like here. A breed this size copes well, provided shade and water are always within reach. Maintain strict tick, flea and worm control, which peak in the wet season.

Living with a Jenday Conure in Chen

With independent houses common, there is usually room for a small-sized breed to exercise at home. With more room to work with, the routine can stay informal, though it should still be regular.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the bird approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Summers here are mild, peaking at about 26°C in June, so heat is rarely the problem for a Jenday Conure that it is on the plains.

Winter nights fall to about 4°C in January. A Jenday Conure feels that: bedding raised off the floor, a sweater or warm cover at night, and a room kept out of the draught.

The rainy season runs from April to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Keep the cage out of damp corners and change the paper daily.

For a new Jenday Conure bird, the easiest months to arrive are October: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
