The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the bird approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Space and the outdoors with a Dusky Lorikeet

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a family friendly, good with kids bird the fit is usually good either way.

Feeding a small bird here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a small build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In mild tropical plateau conditions water matters as much as food — the plateau climate is relatively moderate, which suits a wide range of breeds, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Grooming and coat care in Devarakonda

Let the weather set the schedule, not the calendar. With the plateau climate is relatively moderate, which suits a wide range of breeds, a Dusky Lorikeet's coat and skin want checking more often through the brief pre-monsoon heat. On a smaller coat, irritation shows up well before matting does. Keep vaccinations, deworming and annual vet checks on schedule year-round.

Devarakonda is hottest in May, averaging 40°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to May. A Dusky Lorikeet needs real protection from that: a cage well away from windows and direct sun, a shallow bath dish, and a room that stays under about 32°C.

Winters are mild, with December nights around 15°C, so cold is not a concern.

Most of the year's rain falls in September. Keep the cage out of damp corners and change the paper daily.

For a new Dusky Lorikeet bird, the easiest months to arrive are January, February, June, October, November and December: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
