Exercise and routine through the cold winter season in Rishikesh

The cold winter season is the stretch that needs planning. The cooler climate suits thick-coated breeds but needs winter planning for others, so split the activity across two cooler outings rather than one long session. Consistency does more for a Scarlet Macaw than intensity ever will. Provide a warm, draught-free sleeping spot and a coat for short-haired breeds in winter.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most birds eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Feeding a large bird here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a large build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In cool hill conditions water matters as much as food — the cooler climate suits thick-coated breeds but needs winter planning for others, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Grooming and coat care in Rishikesh

Let the weather set the schedule, not the calendar. With the cooler climate suits thick-coated breeds but needs winter planning for others, a Scarlet Macaw's coat and skin want checking more often through the cold winter season. On a larger coat, matting and trapped moisture are what to catch early. Check paws for cracking and ice between toes during the coldest months.

Rishikesh is hottest in May, averaging 40°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from May to June. A Scarlet Macaw needs real protection from that: a cage well away from windows and direct sun, a shallow bath dish, and a room that stays under about 32°C.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 8°C. A light sweater helps a large Scarlet Macaw on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Keep the cage out of damp corners and change the paper daily.

For a new Scarlet Macaw bird, the easiest months to arrive are March, October and November: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
