The breed you want often isn't bred in your city, so many Indian buyers end up ordering a pet from another state. That can work well. The weak point is the journey: hours in a carrier, heat or cold, and repeated handling are hard on a young animal, and stress can bring out illness in the first week. This guide explains what transit does to puppies, kittens and birds, the questions to ask before you book, and how to make the arrival easier.
Why long journeys are hard on young pets
- Stress lowers immunity. Young animals under stress are more likely to show infections they were already incubating, such as parvovirus in puppies or respiratory and gut infections in birds.
- Temperature swings. Indian summers above 40°C and winter nights in the north are risky for animals that can't move away from heat or cold.
- Food and water breaks. Long journeys interrupt feeding routines, and small birds and young puppies have little reserve.
- Handling. Every transfer between vehicles, people or holding areas adds stress.
Shorter journeys mean less of all four. That's why the single most useful question is where the pet is actually coming from.
Questions to ask before you book
- Where exactly is the pet now? Ask for the city or region, not just "our farm".
- How long will the journey take, and will it travel at night or in the cooler hours?
- Who travels with it? An escort who checks on the animal is very different from cargo or a parcel courier.
- What carrier will it use, and how will it get food and water?
- What happens if there's a delay because of weather, a route closure or a breakdown?
- Is there a nearer source for the same breed?
- What does the health guarantee cover if the pet falls ill in the first days?
How Nearby Pets India keeps journeys short
We used to hear most about transit stress from buyers far from our Punjab base, in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and the North East. Today pets are sourced from partner farms in the buyer's own region where the breed is available:
- Punjab for North India
- Maharashtra for West and Central India
- Karnataka for South India, including Tamil Nadu
- Kerala for Kerala
- Kolkata for East and North East India
Deliveries run through 12 facilitation centres: Ludhiana, Chandigarh, Ambala, Mumbai, Bhopal, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Sattur, Nagercoil and Kolkata. If a breed isn't available in your region, we source it from the next-nearest one and tell you the journey before you book. The pet's price stays the same either way. The full map is on where your pet comes from.
Other safeguards: pets travel with an escort in ventilated carriers, we don't move animals between 11 AM and 4 PM in summer, and after booking you see your pet on a live video call when it's collected from the farm.
Species notes
Puppies
They need water stops and should travel only after their first vaccination and a vet's fit-for-travel check. Flat-faced breeds such as Pugs and French Bulldogs are at high risk in heat, so plan their travel for cool hours.
Kittens
They are easily stressed by noise and handling. A covered carrier and a quiet arrival room help.
Birds
Small parrots like Sun Conures and lovebirds are sensitive to drafts, heat and cold. They should never travel by parcel courier. See buying a Sun Conure online for bird-specific checks.
Preparing for arrival
- Set up a quiet, temperature-comfortable space before the pet arrives.
- Have the same food it has been eating.
- Offer water first, food after it settles, and keep visitors away on day one.
- Check it at the door before paying or signing. Use the delivery and handover checklist.
- Book a vet visit within two or three days, or an avian vet for birds.
Warning signs after a long journey
Mild tiredness and soft stools for a day are common. See a vet the same day for repeated vomiting, watery or bloody diarrhoea, refusing food or water for more than a day, laboured breathing, or, in birds, staying fluffed up on the cage floor. Our first 7 days guide explains the 7-day health guarantee.
Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to buy a pet from another state in India?
It can be, if the pet travels with an escort in a ventilated carrier, avoids peak heat, and the journey is as short as possible. Ask where the pet is now, how long the journey takes and who travels with it before you book.
How can I reduce transit stress for my new pet?
Choose a source in or near your region, plan travel in cool hours, have a quiet space and the same food ready, offer water first, and limit handling and visitors on the first day.
Will my pet from Nearby Pets India travel across the country?
Usually not. Pets are sourced from partner farms in the buyer's own region where available, and if a breed must come from another region you are told before booking.
Does a pet from a distant region cost more?
Not at Nearby Pets India. The pet's price is the same across India whichever region supplies it.
Can birds be sent by courier between states?
They should not be. Live birds need escorted or dedicated live-animal transport with ventilation, food and water.
