The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most puppies eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Feeding a large dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a large frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because near-constant moisture means skin, paw and bedding hygiene need real attention, keep water available and watch intake through the extended rainy season.

Grooming and coat care in Atoizu

The aim is dry, clean skin — appearance comes second. Atoizu being high-rainfall tropical, near-constant moisture means skin, paw and bedding hygiene need real attention, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. Towel-dry after every walk in the rains and check between the toes for irritation.

For a loyal, shy, alert, large-sized breed that mostly changes when things happen rather than what happens. Towel-dry after every walk in the rains and check between the toes for irritation.

The city sits at about 1,182 m above sea level, so it runs cooler than the plains around it.

Summers here are mild, peaking at about 28°C in June, so heat is rarely the problem for a Kanni that it is on the plains.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 5°C. A Kanni has a short, thin coat, so a light sweater helps on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from May to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk.

For a new Kanni puppy, the easiest months to arrive are October: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
